DON BOSCO FOUNDATION OF CAMBODIA

The purpose of Don Bosco Foundation is To train orphans and poor youth in skills they can use to get a job and by their work they can come out of the circle of poverty and contribute to the new Cambodia.

Therefore all the activities planned by the Don Bosco Foundation of Cambodia evolve around training and education. The technical courses last two years.
 

The foundation has 6 vocational centers in school year 2007-2008. The students’ age is between 16-21 years, they are both male and female.

I. THE DON BOSCO TECHNICAL SCHOOL IN NEW PHNOM PENH, PHNOM PENH

It has enrolled the following numbers of students in its technical education all programs. The programs last two years when the students will receive a diploma.

Budget: The students receive:

 

1. Education free of charge

2. Mid-day meal free of charge

3. Boarders (467 mostly orphans or from very poor family) receive boarding and all meals free of charge

4. Medical assistance in case of necessity

5. Individual assistance in case of necessity according to the philosophy money should not be obstacle to succeed in school.
 

Budget needs for one student for one school year is around ±US 300. The main supporters making it possible to accept so many poor youth free of charge assisting the running cost of the centers are:

- The Foundation for Cambodia

- Missiewerk M.A.W of Groniugen

- Benefactors via the Salesian procures of Bonn and Soest.
 

A big thank you for giving these youngsters an opportunity to learn a trade which helps them to come out of the circle of poverty.
 

VII. FURTHER EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY
 

a) Don Bosco Center- New Phnom Penh, Phnom Penh

Runs a youth center for the children and youth of the surroundings for evenings and on Sundays and public holidays providing healthy recreation, special classes in English and a place to do homework. The center has an enrollment of about 600 children and youth.

b) Don Bosco Center-Sihanouk Ville

Runs a youth center for the children and youth of the surroundings on Sundays and public holidays providing healthy recreation, special classes like English. The center has an enrollment of about 200 children and youth.
 

c) Don Bosco Center- Poipet

- Runs a recovery home for trafficked children or children in distress. It gives hospitality to 25 children (13 girls) in school year 2007-2008.

- Runs a literacy center to give elementary education to bigger children (10-15 years). It has 145 students in school year 2007-2008.

- Runs a feeding program for 70 schools in the Poipet area giving one meal a day to 30,009 school children. This project wants to draw all the children into school and complete elementary education. It also has a component of upgrading the 600 teachers of Poipet. This program is supported by the agricultural department of the United States (USDA)

d) Don Bosco Center- Tuek Thla – Phnom Penh
 

This center runs beside skill- training:

- A kindergarten school with 270 children (142 girls)

- An elementary school with 394 (200 girls) children

- Manages the elementary school at Phum Chreh- New Phnom Penh with 321children (155 girls) and a kindergarten school with 100 children (44 girls)

- Gives board and lodging to 46 destitute children studying elementary grades.
 

e) Don Bosco Center- Tuol Kork- Phnom Penh

This center runs besides skill training: A kindergarten school with 162 children

(74 girls).

VIII. DON BOSCO CHILDREN FUND (DBCF) CAMBODIA
 

This project assists children (6-12 years) who were unable to get to school because of the poverty of the family. Once in the program the children are supported in their further studies according to their ability. For many families to send their children to school is a luxury; survival and food security is their main problem. This school year we will assist 4555 children (boy 2364, girls 2191). The children receive a monthly assistance partly in goods and partly in cash. The social workers of DBCF make sure that the children make progress and remain in school.

IX. SCHOOL OPERATED BY DON BOSCO CHILDREN FUND
 

1) DBCF operates a literacy program school (elementary school for bigger children 10-16 years, in Audaung Chenh-Battambang)

Grade 1 37 children (10 girls)

Grade 3 32 children (17 girls)

Grade 5 35 children (14 girls)

Budget is US 30,000 Total 104 children
 

2) It operates a literacy program school (elementary school for bigger children 10-16 years, in SalaBalath-Battambang)

Grade 1 40 children (20 girls)

Grade 3 35 children (17 girls)

Grade 6 28 children (16 girls)

Budget 15 US 30,000 Total 103 children

Both literacy centers are assisted by sponsors via VIS of Rome (Italy) and DMOS / Comide of Brussels (Belgium)
 

3) It operates a sewing school in Kep city called the Hatrans School for 17 girls besides sewing, literacy is taught to the girls so as to upgrade their school level.

Budget is US 8,000 and the school is sponsored by Mr. Gerard Van Hal.
 

X. CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS 2007 – 2008
 

DON BOSCO – SIHANOUK VILLE
 

- 2 buildings to serve as hostel buildings for male and female students of the hotel school. One building to serve as administration offices and classrooms.

Budget US 480,000

Sponsor: Prince Albert of Monaco Foundation.

- Village school (6 class-rooms) at Onlong Kropae (Kompong Som Province) Budget US 36,000

Sponsor: Scholenproject Cambodia, Rotlerdam and NCDO of the Netherlands.
 

DON BOSCO – PHNOM PENH
 

- Kitchen / Toilets / bathing rooms for girls hostel.

Budget US 40,000

Sponsor: Hille Foundation, Dortmund – Germany.

- One village school (6 class-rooms) in Pum Khoh Roka, District of Kompong Siem, Kompong Cham Province.

Budget US 34,000

Sponsor: Sioch of Hengelo the Netherlands.
 

DON BOSCO – POIPET
 

- Cement water tancs tower. Budget: US 20,000.
